The win was Bangladesh’s first in the biennial tournament since their victory over Sri Lanka in the group stage of the 2009 edition.

Having slumped to defeats against Afghanistan (4-0) and the Maldives (3-1) in their first two Group B matches, Bangladesh are already out of the competition. Bhutan are winless in their campaign.

Maruful Haque's men took the lead in the seventh minute through a corner from captain Mamunul Islam.

The skipper swung it across the post for Hemanta Vincent Biswas to send the ball back to the front of goal where Topu Barman calmly headed it in.

Bhutan backline was the pinned by Bangladesh who kept pressing high up the pitch in search of more goals.

Bhutan's Tshering Dorji gave in to the pressure and brought down Hemanta in the box to concede a penalty. The referee was forced to flash his red card when Chimi Dorji protested against the decision.

Shakhawat Hossain Rony converted the spotkick with a low shot to the left.

Rony added the third with a sublime finish halfway into the second half.

He latched onto a long ball from deep into the Bangladesh half, scooted away from the defenders before slotting it past the goalkeeper.

Rony then missed a couple of chances to complete a hat-trick.
